CLARKS SUMMIT - Retired Navy officer John Carlson is a registered Republican, but he supports Democrat Chris Carney over the Republican challenger, Tom Marino, in the 10th Congressional District.

The choice is about people, not political party, Carlson said Friday at a rally at the VFW hall here, where more than four dozen veterans endorsed Carney and announced the formation of a "Veterans for Carney" coalition.

During an interview with a local radio station Monday, Republican Congressional candidate Tom Marino endorsed eliminating or at least cutting Social Security benefits for those not yet using the federal program to keep it financially solvent.

A day later his campaign said the remarks, highlighted in earnest Tuesday by Democratic opponent Chris Carney, were taken out of context and vowed that Marino supported protecting the social program. But Carney’s campaign has pounced on an issue that has particular resonance for voters in the northeast 10th Congressional District.

On active duty and not permitted to discuss politics, U.S. Rep. Chris Carney was quiet last week as his opponent in the November election attacked his views on taxpayer-funded abortion. On Monday, not silenced by a Navy Reserve uniform, Carney went on the offensive in a conference call.

He called out his Republican challenger in the 10th District, Tom Marino, for making statements last week that insinuated Carney used his wife’s breast cancer surgery as a reason to duck placing his name as a co-sponsor on a bill that would have prohibited taxpayer funds being used for abortions. Marino made the claims, Carney said, at a time he was restricted from commenting.

The U.S. House passed a measure late Thursday that could provide a significant boost to the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway Project through language included by Congressman Chris Carney (D-Pa. 10).

The Carney language makes it possible for the 13-mile CSVT project to be designated as an Appalachian Regional Commission corridor by removing an existing, stagnant corridor from the commission’s highway system. This is a critical first step toward the possible designation, a move that would place the CSVT on the Appalachian Development Highway System and provide significant funding for the project.

The day after he visited the site of the Gulf Coast oil spill, U.S. Rep. Chris Carney described what he saw as “sickening” and vowed to investigate what happened in the aftermath and how the government and BP responded to the crisis.

Along with several other members of the Homeland Security Committee, Carney, D-Dimock Township, toured the spill site and areas affected by the oil leak around the Gulf Coast from the air.

On Tuesday, a bill introduced in the U.S. House by U.S. Rep. Chris Carney, D-Dimock Township, seeks to help defray the costs of training of law enforcement agents, and as a result get more officers properly trained and certified to help in the fight against illegal immigration.

Under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is authorized to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, permitting designated officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions, provided that the local officers receive appropriate training and function under the supervision of sworn ICE officers.

U.S. Rep. Chris Carney (PA-10) has introduced legislation to improve counseling for student veterans.

The Student Veteran Counseling Improvement Act, co-sponsored by Congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL), will provide college and university counselors and mental health professionals with better resources with which to treat student veterans at a time when an increasing number of veterans are attending college upon returning from war.

"We owe it to our men and women in uniform to ensure that their mental health needs are met," said Carney, who serves in the same Navy Reserve unit as Congressman Kirk. "With an increasing number of veterans returning to college, it is critical that school-based counselors and mental health professionals be familiar with the challenges specific to our fighting men and women."

The Army recalled the helmets two weeks ago, when officials said the advanced combat helmets failed ballistic testing standards. Many were used by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The company's decision comes after the Justice Department launched an investigation into its helmet manufacturing and an amendment was proposed to the Defense Authorization Bill. That amendment would have forced the company to submit to competitive bidding.

The author of the amendment, Rep. Chris Carney, D-Pennsylvania, said, "Our military men and women deserve only the best equipment and it has become clear that Federal Prison Industries cannot meet the standards required in manufacturing helmets."
